Polynesia crash course
Polynesia is one of three anthropological regions of Oceania whose pre-colonial population generally belongs to one ethno-cultural family that spead out over centuries of maritime migrations. Polynesia is a huge triangle with over a thousand islands, its corners at Easter Island, Hawaii and New Zealand. The major island groups within Polynesia are Tonga, the Samoas, Tonga, the Cook Islands and exotic French Polynesia. Near the center of Polynesia is Niue is solitary island state.
Pre-colonial history
About 3400 year ago the Lapita culture spread eastward from New Guinea, to Fiji, to Tonga and Samoa bringing their pottery and household tools, developing the Polynesian culture. Then around three hundred BC, they did another push to the Cook Islands, then Tahiti and the Marquesas and Tuamotus islands. Basalt artifacts bear x-ray fluorescence results to this period. Easter Island was inhabited six hundred years later which is upheld by more evidence including the transfer of certain fauna and flora in line with the Polynesian culture. They landed and occupied Hawaii in about 400 AD and backtracked to New Zealand at approximately 1000 AD. These expeditions are considered among mankind's greatest achievments, right up there with Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe and Americans walking on the moon in 1969. Setting out into the vast reaches of the huge Pacific Ocean on huge out-rigger canoes, not knowing what is ahead, using crude star and ocean current calculations, wind and paddle powered, completely dependent on locating land for food and water or certain death, these people were either extremely lucky or extremely intelligent, though no one knows what percentage of these exploratory expeditions ended in disaster. Their counterparts from the modernized Western nations a thousand years later seldom sailed beyond seeing land.Cultures of Polynesia
Polynesia is divided into two cultural regions. The west has its higher populations and interactions, its importance to marriage, monetary, judiciary and trading institutions, making changes is very difficult to do as it would be changing an island civilization. Whereas in the isolated eastern Polynesian islands, the eldest spoke about their existence, their creation, and everyone listened, how could you argue?
The Polynesian cultures of the east were developed on smaller islands and atolls, where navigation, kinship, religion, fishing, farming, canoe-building and weather predicting were highly important as these more isolated populations depended on all these things for survival.Amazingly, New Zealand was settled by eastern Polynesians, Maoris, who had to adapt their cultural beliefs into a cooler environment.
They traded everything, especially when the white man arrived. There was often severe crop damage when hurricanes would bathe crops in salt water on the low-lying islands, so their protein came from the sea. Navigators were quite respected on all the islands and each island maintained a house of navigation, along with a canoe-building.
Polynesians settled into hamlets which were a few small houses with vegetable and fruit gardens throughout a larger island because they could be divided into so many zones each used for agriculture and water supply without putting a strain on these resources. The smaller islands, whereas, had the thirty home villages on the coast with fortified wood and stone palisades and resistant walls. However, perhaps because New Zealand was so big, fortified villages were the norm, as there was just so much room to extract resources from the nearby outskirts.
There were so many sects of convincing Christians who made their way throughout the islands, that Christianity in some mixed forms was generally adopted.
The Polynesian tongue was part of the Family of Oceanic Languages, which was derived from the Austronesian Family of Languages.
Polynesian Mythology
The first missionaries worked hard to destroy the ancient beliefs of the Polynesians, and were helped in the process by the Polynesians themselves. People with such wealth and power must have had equally powerful gods. The new priests that had become followers of Christianity refused to pass on the old religious ideas, and the oral line was broken. Fortunately, some of the missionaries recorded the mythology of the Polynesians, perhaps to show back in Europe what heathens they were dealing with, and this is the where the majority of the information comes from today regarding Polynesian mythology.
Much of Polynesia's mythology was kept intact because of the songs, orations and poetry that changed little, and were passed down from chief to his children, future chiefs. They praised the great chiefs of the past, especially those who captained boats to new lands. They had love songs, and orations, even eulogies for canoe builders, house builders, fishermen, even temple builders. Their prayers asked Gods to come to the shrines and temples (maraes), and if words were misplaced or omitted, disaster and death were sure to follow, therefore, they didn't change much ,and history remained intact by an large. These rehearsed orations, songs and poetry, with their demi-gods and folk heroes, spread from western Polynesia to the extremes of northern, eastern and southern Polynesia.
An image of the god of fisherman, Taringa-Nui, was placed on the bow of every canoe for fishing, and offerings were made to him, before they went to sea. As time went on he stories evolved on each island in slightly different directions, but there were the old stand-bys that changed little, tapa cloth was beaten by Hina in the moon, fisherman Maui snagged the sun, Kae killed Tinirau's pet whale, little people from the forest built Rata's canoe, and sky visitor Tawhaki. They had lullabies for babies, and curious child stories, designed to help pass the time, always acknowledging the presence of the nearby gods.
Any work done such as canoe building, house building, planting crops, and fishing had two components, the actual technical part, and the ritual part, and this was passed down from generation to generation.
There were three types of chiefs, and all had their place in society. The divine chief was a direct descendant of the gods and a confirmation of the mythology that people believed. The inspirational chief was the mouth-piece for the gods, and what he said was believed to come directly from the gods. He was consulted before important events, and basically interpreted old myths while inventing new ones. The ceremonial chief helped modulated man's relationship to nature as well as being the figurehead at most ceremonies involving births, marriages, events, and deaths of a chief.
Only in western Polynesia was this pattern not followed and chiefs there were the repositories of tradition, passing information from one generation down to the next without the dynamic changes caused by the present influences of the gods.
Cosmos Creation
Creation was believed to be caused by two factors, either an omni-powerful creator that turned light out of dark, something out of nothing, form out of the formless, tangible out of intangible, or that things pre-existed and were slowly evolving into an organized natural order because of the creator, though I don't see why both sets of beliefs were not compatible.
Western Polynesia had a pre-existing creator, Tangaloa, with the power to create all things and who lived in a huge void. He had his bird Tuli, a messenger that searched over the endless seas for a place to rest. Finally Tangaloa threw down a rock that became the Island of Manu'a, the biggest Samoan island, then made more Samoan islands, then he made the islands of Tonga and Fiji. The bird complained he needed shade so Tangaloa gave him a vine, from which mankind evolved.
They had some personalized myths of creation involving the gods Tane, and Tangaroa, plus Tu and Rongo. The earth mother and sky father were separated by their child gods, pushing sky father upwards to make room for the land, plants, animals and of course man. The first born sons of any primal pair had a hand at creation. In the western part of Polynesia, still Tangaroa or Tangaloa were the only creation gods, a continuation of the Melanesian beliefs as they spread eastward.
Mankind's origins
In the western part of Polynesia Tuli, Tangaloa's messenger bird dropped the vine for shade onto the land, it first spread, but then later whithered, and was covered in maggots. Tangaloa took the individual maggots and added heads and arms and legs, gave them a soul, and turned them into people. In eastern Polynesia, mankind basically evolved through creation. Tane Mahuta, the Forest God, made a woman from a mound of earth, then impregnated her. There is a tremendous blurring of ancestors, from the devine to the human. Many people would carry themselves proudly that they themselves had blood of the gods, demi-gods, and even human heroes who had direct dealing with the gods. Often these ancestors were able to travel between the spirit land and the world of life, and were eulogized in the oral drama, song, and poetry to the point where they were better known than the gods themselves. In order to have any power, people tried their hardest to convince others of their divine relatives, and when two people claimed common ancient relatives, they were themselves all of a sudden cousins.
Polynesian navigation
While Europeans were hugging the shoreline in the daylight to get around Africa like a blind man with a white cane, the Polynesians were setting out on discovery voyages for several hundred miles, often more, in huge out-rigger canoes with sometimes hundreds of people onboard, trying to find a dot of land on a huge ocean of blue, or die. They needed extreme confidence, knowledge of the stars, a feel for the ocean currents, and an understanding of weather patterns, without mentioning the plain luck that had to be involved avoiding storms that could blow them a hundred miles off course. Captain James Cook actually encountered a group of castaway Tahitians who were lost at sea after being twisted around in a storm. Cook basically concluded that the South Pacific islands were first inhabited by the few that survived these perilous voyages of discovery. This was a view projected by Andrew Sharp more than four hundred years later after exhaustive study on the subject.
Romantic writers around 1900 started a complimentary point of view that these people did know what they were doing, and were very methodical in their approach to the sea voyages. One theory which was dispelled recently by DNA evidence said they came from South America on balsa rafts. Actually their ancestors were of S.E. Asian and in particular, Taiwan ancestry, who set out between one and three thousand years BC, and also Melanesian in genetic makeup, basically hybrids supporting most of the archaeological and linguistic conclusions with relative certainty.
The Lapida culture suddenly apeared around 1300 BC, in the northwest Melanesian Bismarck Archipelago, with its permanent homesteads, and mostly, its fine distinguishable clay pottery. Within four hundred years this pottery was distributed right across Melanesia and into the western islands of Polynesia reaching Samoa and Tonga, where the amazing culture of the Polynesians started to develop.
Research and practice
The theory of Polynesian expansion took a turn for the real in 1968 when a catamaran was sailed by David Lewis to New Zealand from Tahiti without instruments, only the stars. Since this time several researchers have used the knowledge of navigators from the Philippines and Micronesia, as they, to this day use the stars as their primary tool of navigation. Conclusions have been drawn emphasizing that several things were used on each voyage, not just the stars, ocean currents and temperatures, but cloud formations over certain islands, and wave direction and intensity. Certain types of birds followed certain fly-routes between major islands. The frigatebird may have been taken on voyages and released occasionally. It is unable to land on wateror it would drown, so it would either head in the direction of land or return to the boat.
Reading the stars became an art, and the whole of the sky was like looking up at the inside of a giant galactic dome. They had the names of over 150 stars and knew for certain which stars would be directly over which island at which time of day and month and year. As that star continued west, it would be replaced by another star directly over their chosen island.
They used ocean waves and swells to determine if they were close to an island chain, understanding how an island chain may divert currents around it. When close they would watch for island birds and their direction of flight and see clouds form over islands as air currents rise and condense when the hit a land mass. They could even see shallow water reflections made on the underside of clouds. And it is certainly likely that navigators would determine how many days it would normally take to make a certain voyage, 'canoe days', as opposed to knots per hour.

Today's Polynesian economy
With the exception of New Zealand, the majority of independent Polynesian islands derive much of their income from foreign aid and remittances from those who live in other countries. Some encourage their young people to go where they can earn good money to remit to their stay-at-home relatives. Many Polynesian locations, such as Easter Island, supplement this with tourism income. Some have more unusual sources of income, such as Tuvalu which marketed its '.tv' internet top-level domain name or the Cooks that relied on stamp sales. A very few others still live as they did before Western Civilization encountered them.
Visiting Polynesia
The islands of Polynesia are a selection of volcanic islands and atolls strewn across the eastern South Pacific. These islands have allured, inspired and enamoured visitors since the time the islands were first discovered. Visiting these islands is a special experience. The lure of these islands is not only due to the hospitable Polynesian people, and their spectacularly beautiful islands, but here is real ambiance here, from the warmth of the air, scented heavily with tropical flowers through to fiery romantic sunsets that signal the end of another fabulous Polynesian day. Although most of today's visitors arrive by scheduled airline flights from all over the world, the Polynesian welcome is still very much the same, warm, friendly, and genuine.
Most islands in Polynesia are separated from the continental land masses, and even from each other, by vast expanses of the Pacific Ocean. Consequently, air travel is usually the most effective means of reaching them and traveling between them. For those with sufficient time and perhaps a sense of adventure, it's possible to reach them by boat, such as a cruise vessel or a sailing ship.
Polynesia hotels
As mentioned above, the following Polynesia hotels had to qualify to be listed here. They must be independently owned and operated, meet minimum eco-friendly requirements, rise to the top after a series of former guest reviews, and their average nightly double occupancy room rate must be less than US$150 per night, however, they are less than $200 per night in French Polynesia and Hawaii as these locations are more expensive.
Click on any hotel website we provide, and talk to a real person. Avoid misunderstandings caused by a middleman. Before you make your reservation, you can request a multi-night or multi-room, child or senior discount; a quiet room, or a top floor room, or a room with a view; or if you wish to be accommodated close to the pool; if you want extra blankets, towels or pillows; or have them recommend and book a tour or car for you in advance; you can request a romantic bouquet of exotic flowers with a note attached waiting in your room, or a chilled bottle of champagne; or ask questions about the surrounding area, dining, nightlife, laundry services or luggage storage, or a possible early check-in or late check-out. Play one hotel against the other. You can't do any of this when you book through a middleman, and without the middleman's whopping 20% to 40% commission to pay, a hotel has far more flexibility in satisfying your requests! The most qualified American Samoa hotels under $150 (in order)

- Sadies by the Sea - On a pristine Beach in the heart of Pago Pago, bring the kids, comfortable accommodations. There is evidence that the legendary Sadie Thompson of Sumerset Maugham's short story "Rain" was a real person and that in 1916, she arrived in Pago Pago aboard the boat "Sonoma" from Hawaii. Maugham was also a passenger on the boat. He described her boarding of the “Sonoma” as a “blond runaway” from Iwelei running up the gangplank at the last moment before departure. Iwelei was a redlight district on the outskirts of Honolulu. It was a storm at the time that made boat travel to Apia impossible; causing Maugham, Sadie, and some missionaries to wait out the blow together in Pago Pago. There is no deportation records on Sadie Thompson in Pago Pago, however she is mentioned in a letter to Samoan Information as ”running a House of Prostitution” catering to U.S. sailors. It is said she called her place of business (our Sadie's Restaurant), the Sadie Thompson Inn. It is believed Sadie returned to Honolulu aboard the steamship "Ventura " after her romance with a Samoan was discouraged. Although Sadie could never be found again, she became part of Samoa. She also became a legend. The Management and Staff of Sadie's thank you for visiting with us and hope you enjoy Sadie's as much as we do. Fa'afetai Lava. Sadie's by the Sea was built in the 1960s as a luxury resort hotel (Pago Pago Intercontinental Hotel). With a $2.5m makeover, rooms have recently been renovated to standards surpassing their former glory. Step out of your room onto a gorgeous sandy beach with spectacular harbor views. Amenities include in-room fridge/microwave, iron, hair dryer, cable TV and wireless internet. Kayak rentals and Snorkel/mask/fins are available for reef exploration.

The dark motel-style rooms open to veranda-like walkways across the front of the white stucco building. The units are simple but clean. Each is equipped with a double or two single beds, cable TV mounted on the wall, a desk and chairs, and a tiled shower-only bathroom. A restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch only. It's a 15-minute walk to the island's McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets, but consider renting a car.
- Turtle and Shark Lodge - The Turtle & Shark Lodge is edged on two sides by water, with the Pacific Ocean to the South, and Larson's Cove to the West. With a great view, comfortable facilities, and an excellent, secluded location, the Turtle & Shark Lodge is perfect for the business traveler, as well as for the casual tourist seeking a warm and familiar home-like place where they can kick off their shoes and enjoy a moment of rest and respite. The lodge is named after the local legend of the Turtle & Shark, and while there are many versions of the legend, they all agree on one thing, and that is the location where the Turtle & Shark can be called and seen. This special place is located at the very start of the road that leads back to the lodge. To the South and West of the lodge, the Pacific Ocean's blue waves crash on high rocky cliffs. Just visible from the cove side of the lodge are the beaches of Larson's Cove. The lodge is only a half hour hike from the beaches. Just in front of the lodge is a lookout over the blow hole. Grab a chair during high tide and sit outside and feel the rumble of ocean just before the blow hole erupts. When the blow hole is active during a particularly high tide, it can be seen to be throwing water more than 50 feet high, and often quite a bit higher.

The most qualified French Polynesia hotels under $200 (in order)
If you are prepared to pay the high rates, there are several international chain hotels found on the twelve main islands on the three archipeligos, Society, Marquesas and Tuamotu. They are well advertised, and you can find them by searching the hotel chain (not recommended however, and against the philosophy of Adventure Hotels.
You will find that though the islands of Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea have four out of five hotels in French Polynesia, the smaller, and lesser-known islands are gaining popularity.
This website, however, will concentrate on family accommodations for those whose budget matters, wishing a more authentic Polynesian experience where the warm welcome is unrehearsed. We will list an excellent variety of smaller, more personal family hotels that let you know you are in Polynesia. These type of accommodations can be broken down into four types.
(1) The bed and breakfasts are furnished bungalows of up to four units per home, and can accommodate up to about twelve people with either shared or private baths.
(2) Family holiday homes are furnished bungalows with up to nine units and twenty seven persons with privare baths and little kitchenettes.
(3) Family-operated guest homes are the same as family holiday homes except the offer breakfast and dinner.
(4) A family hotel has full room and board from an a la carte menu.
For budget accommodation, the best rates are usually those negotiated directly with the hotel, so we have given you contact info. Normally we try not to list any accommodations without their own website atleast on the first page of the search engines, however, in French Polynesia this doesn't leave us with many choices, therefore we have also listed mid-range and lower accommodations with only e-mail addresses and some with just telephone numbers. Though it hasn't been easy in French Polynesia on some islands like Bora Bora and Tahiti, we have also listed only independent-style accommodations with average prices below USD $200 per night, a few much lower. There is no reason to pay more. We have used a complicated system of guest reviews to determine the best value hotels, so you won't have to do the work. We believe, if the hotel doesn't have the wherewithall to proudly display and inform you about their hotel on the internet, they probably don't have the wherewithall to make your stay comfortable, a pleasure and problem-free, but in French Polynesia, you have to cross your fingers a bit.
